Alfred Reynolds of Valve has stated that Valve will be releasing a new version of Steam's dedicated server program for Half-life next week that will address CPU usage concerns with the dedicated server product.
The high server CPU usage, which started with the first Steam version and has seemingly increased with each new Steam patch, is most noticable when playing such maps as de_aztec and de_cbble, causing higher latencies and sometimes choke and ping spikes. According to Alfred, Valve has successfully run a no-lag 12-player de_aztec test server on a 333mhz Linux box, using a beta build of the new dedicated server, which is outstanding for that combination of hardware and software. These results will, according to Valve, transfer over to Windows servers as well (we use Windows machines since they perform better for Half-life servers in all situations).
As soon as this new patch is released -- according to him it will be Monday or later -- we will be upgrading every Half-life based server we operate. As always, the upgrade will be quick and painless, lasting about a half-hour, during which time our servers would be offline.
