Are you trying to install SQL Server 2008 or an update involving SQL Server 2008 before .NET 3.5?

Have you tried installing the latest .NET 3.5 service pack directly? If it was installed already, have you tried removing it and then reinstalling?

I'd expect for .NET 3.5 to actually be included with the OS. Have you checked to see if it is enabled as a Windows feature?

Do you mean that it's enabled? If so, it should work without your needing to install anything extra.

I had the same problem in the past.
Not sure if I posted in the forum or in a ticket about it.

If you had .net 3.5 installed and then installed an SQL server, I had a problem with the SQL server starting up.

Once the SQL server is installed, I think I had to reinstall .NET 3.5 afterwards, and I think I also installed .NET 4.0 and the SQL server started working fine.
