I was running ubuntu 10.04 LTS and was in the process of updating the server to 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I completed the installation process and proceeded to restart but upon restarting the server, I was unable to SSH into the server.

I then used VNC and found that I had this error:
gave up waiting for root device. Common Problems:

ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/05d73587-4b0a-40bd-aa16-d6a2c21b2413 does not exist

Not quite sure what to do to fix this issue

The kernel in 11.04 does not properly support Xen. As part of the upgrade, hopefully it kept your old kernel as a selection -- if so, selecting it during the boot process should get you back up and running.

Thanks, that worked. but does that mean that everytime I restart the server I will have to select the older kernel?

You should be able to change the default by editing /etc/default/grub and then running "update-grub". You may also be able to change it with the "grub-set-default" command.

The chosen number is from the order in the list, starting at 0.

Hey just curious 11.10 just came out and I was wondering how is it in terms of interacting on a virtual server?

Cheers

I have not yet had time to test 11.10. If you have a VDS and would like to experiment with it, please open a support request and I can add its ISO as a boot option on your machine.
