When would one need to invest into SSL for their site and why? Vary curious to find out if I where to need it in the futcher or not.

SSL only really comes into play if your site needs to handle sensitive data over the wire, such as credit card numbers. Most sites never need to use it, since even e-commerce sites generally use 3rd party payment processors that make it unnecessary.

We use SSL for our control panel here because the control panel accepts credit/debit cards directly, and we need for the login information and all other data to be kept secure.
