+ Frequently Asked Questions - Main
Q: Why should I rent a server from NuclearFallout?
A: There are a few reasons why you should consider renting a server from us:
- Our servers are inexpensive and fast. Try playing on one of our rented servers and experience the speed first-hand.
- Our powerful control panel makes administration of your server a breeze. Try it; you'll like it.
- We know what we're doing. NFo has been providing a variety of servers to the overall gaming community for over four years. We've set up servers in all types of configurations.
- We are fast, friendly, and professional. Our email support is second to none.
- We are continually improving. If you like what you're getting now, you'll love what you'll be getting in the future.
Q: Can I use the server I rent from you for both public and private purposes?
A: If you purchase a public server, feel free to lock and unlock your server at will. If you purchase a private server, you will need to keep it locked (passworded) at all times.
Q: Can I specify what map my server starts with? Or does that cost extra?
A: Yes, you can edit the appropriate files to set what map your server starts with (autoexec.cfg for Half-Life), and no, we don't charge extra. As long as you don't change maxplayers, ip, or port at the same time, we'll be happy.
Q: I'd like to restart my server. How can I do it?
A: You can use your control panel to start, stop, or restart your server.
Q: Can I do anything else with my control panel?
A: Your control panel can be used to send rcon commands to the server, although you will need to supply the rcon password. It can also be used to change your stats settings. For more information on what it can do, click Control Panel on the left and then click the link for the preview page.
Q: Can I upgrade my server later to support more players or to add extras?
A: Yes. If you need any changes made to your server, you can use the order page to do so -- it will lead you through the process, including arranging a prorated for the rest of the current time, if necessary.
Q: Where will my server be located? What sort of line will it be on?
A: You choose the location and backbone provider when you order. For more information on your options, see this link.
Q: What kind of hardware will my server be hosted on?
A: Our servers are hosted on a variety of hardware configurations. The minimum hardware configuration we purchase for new servers is shown on our Features page. Our existing fleet of servers has similar machines and most machines have at least four processor cores.
Q: How many servers will be hosted on the same machine as my server?
A: We will only run as many servers on one machine as is possible without causing lag. This generally means between five and ten. You will be able to monitor the CPU usage, memory usage, and bandwidth usage in your control panel under server health, so you will never be in the dark as far as how much of our resources are being used. (And if you think your server is lagging because of insufficient resources, please contact us so that we can move you to a less-utilized server and/or increase your bandwidth).
Q: Do you offer a service whereby I can get a server on a dedicated CPU/machine?
A: No. But if you order a big enough server, you might be put on one ;).
Q: I want to be on port 27015 (or the default port for my game type)! Can I get a server at port 27015 on my own IP address?
A: Yes. All servers receive their own IP address and run on the default port.
Q: I want to switch my server to a different mod! Can I?
A: Yes, you can change your server configuration at any time, to anything we support on the Order page. Simply choose the new server specifications and then use the "This is a change to an existing order" option at the bottom, following the further instructions it gives you.
Q: Can I name my server whatever I want?
A: Yes. Simply edit the configuration file for your server to change the name, anytime you wish, to whatever you wish. We don't require co-branding of any sort (and we don't make you pay extra for not co-branding).
Q: Will my server be Linux? Linux is better!
A: In general, HLDS/SrcDS running under Linux performs worse (i.e., uses more CPU power, gives higher pings, and makes for less stable pings) than HLDS under win32, simply due to the way the game was written. However, Linux is necessary to run 1000 FPS servers, and with the latest hardware and kernel it runs nearly as good as Windows for other configurations. If you would prefer that your server run on a Linux platform, please let us know and we can move you to one of our Linux machines at no cost to you.
Q: Your server rental program sounds too good to be true! What's the catch?
A: No catch! :)
Q: If my server crashes, what will happen?
A: All servers automatically restart if they crash. Crashes are extremely rare for CS servers. If your server begins to frequently crash, please contact us and we can work with you to determine the cause.
Q: How do we pay?
A: We accept all major credit/debit cards. In addition, we have a coffer system that allows for donations to be made to a user -- donations that will automatically be applied first, before any credit card charge is made. This is done through the Payments page in our control panel.
Q: Can NFo host my website?
A: Yes, and for free. Please see the web hosting FAQ.
Q: I've noticed most places charge some sort of one-time setup fee -- do you?
A: NuclearFallout does not charge setup fees except for its reseller program.
Q: Can I request a refund if my server isn't what I wanted?
A: If you decide the server isn't what you wanted within the first two days, simply cancel the subscription on your Payments page and you will not be charged. After you are charged, you will not be able to get a refund. (For more information on our refund policy, click the TOS link at the bottom of this page.)
Q: How many times can I try a new server and then cancel it in the trial period? How many trial periods do I get in general?
A: To prevent abuse, we only allow one trial period per customer.
Q: What if I want a refund past the first two days?
A: We do not give refunds unless we forcefully cancel a server, in which case we provide a prorated refund based on how many days are left in the payment period.
Q: What's the correct process to cancel my server?
A: Click the TOS link at the bottom of this page and scroll to the bottom for cancellation instructions.
Q: When do I need to pay?
A: If you qualify for a free trial period (that is, if you haven't had one before), your payment will be made automatically two days after you subscribe. It will then automatically charge you each month on that day of the recurring cycle (each month, by default). If you do not qualify for a free trial period, you will make a payment immediately and again on that day each payment cycle.
Q: Can I get a discount for ordering several months' worth of rental time at once?
A: Yes, we offer discounts for 3 and 6 month rental periods.
Q: Can I rent a server for just a week or a couple of weeks?
A: No. Servers can only be rented in one-month increments (or more).
Q: How does the subscription work? Do I get charged each month?
A: Your account will be debited automatically each month until you cancel, like most other subscriptions. Cancellations can be made through any time through the Payments page of our control panel.
Q: I hate you! Where can I complain?
A: The flames section of the forums.
Q: I love you! Where can I congratulate you?
A: The testimonials section of the forums.
